Emmy Awards · AI series guide

Can an AI series win an Emmy? The Academy may ask how it was made. Distribution is the real test.

The 78th Emmy rules do not ban AI: the Television Academy reserves the right to inquire about its use, and limits it in three categories. The harder test is eligibility, which needs a national US premiere on air, cable or streaming. Here are the clauses, the categories for a series maker and a plan, starting with the screenplay in 熙熙.
  • The Academy may inquire
  • Three category limits
  • US distribution required

What the Emmy rules say about AI

One notice and three limits.

AI appears four times in 83 pages: once in the introduction and three times in category rules. Everything else applies to an AI series as to any other.
  • The general notice

The introduction states: “The Television Academy reserves the right to inquire about the use of AI in submissions.” It adds that the core of the recognition stays centered on human storytelling, whatever the tools. There is no ban and no disclosure form, but expect questions.

  • Costume concept art

For Costume Illustrators, the rule reads that illustrations must be the work of a person and that no AI images are allowed. Concept art must also be made for the submitted episode, never for pitching or promotion. This is the clearest ban in the book.

  • Voice-over

Eligibility in the voice-over category covers any performance where a character is portrayed, however the visual is made. A production that manipulated a performer's voice with AI must also submit the original recording so the entry can be vetted for eligibility.

  • Stunts

The stunts submitted may not be completely AI or VFX generated. A scene may use effects, but the stunt itself must be a practical performance that actually aired. This one does not touch a fully animated series, which has no stunt performers to enter.

  • What the rules leave open

No definition of “use of AI”, no threshold, no ban on AI picture, writing or music, and no label on screen. The Emmy Awards Committee is the final arbiter of any matter the rules do not explicitly address, according to the introduction.

  • Artwork and animation awards

In the juried animation awards, artwork must be created for the submitted episode, with no stock accepted, and signed by the artist where possible. The rules do not mention AI there, so ask the awards department before you enter AI-made artwork.

Key dates

Who decides

Peers, not a jury.

The Emmys operate without a jury panel in the way film festivals use one. Instead, members of the Television Academy cast votes, with eligibility and voting access determined by peer group alignment that corresponds to each category's discipline.
  • All members, for programs

National active members vote for the outstanding program nominations, except animated and documentary programs. For a series, the electorate is the whole membership, not film critics.

  • Peer groups, for crafts

Individual achievements are judged by peer groups only. Writers vote on writing, editors on editing. A craft entry meets the people who do that craft.

  • The animation group

Animated programs sit outside the all-member vote, and the juried animation awards are decided by a panel from the animation peer group. Expect animators among your judges.

  • Rules of the vote

Nominees cannot vote for their own category in the final round, and quid pro quo or block voting can invalidate votes. You cannot campaign by trading votes.

Categories

Four doors for a series maker.

The Emmys do not organize around themes. They structure recognition through categories defined by runtime thresholds and episode-count criteria. Four of these categories align with a series produced using 熙熙, and beneath each we outline the strategic angle our submission would pursue.
  • 01

    Outstanding Animated Program

A single episode of a series or a special, with at least 65% new animation, for audiences aged 13 and over. A short form track runs from 2 to 20 minutes.

The natural door for an animated series. A series needs six episodes in the eligibility year. Children's programs go to the Children's and Family Emmys, so decide your audience first.

  • 02

Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series

Original series of 2 to 20 minutes per episode on air, cable, satellite or the internet, with at least six episodes in the year and a link to the complete series.

The most realistic door for a small team. Up to six producers can be credited, and a link to the complete series is required, so the whole run is watched. Plan six short episodes.

  • 03

    Limited or Anthology Series

All episodes or parts must premiere nationally by 31 May of the eligibility year.

A closed story told in a few episodes. Finish the whole series before the premiere window, since a missing part pushes everything to the next cycle.

  • 04

    Juried animation awards

Individual awards for storyboard, character design, backgrounds, color and animation, judged by a panel from the animation peer group.

Each artist enters the work they made. Credits and signed artwork matter more than the tool, and the rules do not mention AI here. Check first.

From script to screen

Lost Garden: six shots from one episode.

The Emmys evaluate individual episodes as the unit of consideration, so we present one complete entry here. Lost Garden, episode 2, is an animated series created by the 熙熙 team, and this submission package includes the full scene: the screenplay page that anchors it, each moment rendered as a storyboard frame, and every corresponding shot in its final animated form.

Logline. A newly forged knight whose inner light bleeds through cracked armor undertakes a journey across a world that has long since abandoned hope, searching for the one remaining blacksmith with the knowledge to seal his failing vessel and stop the slow extinction of his light.

Screenplay · episode 2 · page 1

INT. UNDERGROUND CAVERN - LOWER PATH - CONTINUOUS

Towering blue mushrooms rise like houses in scale, their caps spreading wide overhead. LANTERN, a diminutive knight distinguished by the glowing lantern that serves as his helmet, advances through this otherworldly landscape in solitude.

He presses one gauntleted hand firmly against his chest plate. Through the gaps between his armored fingers, sparks of luminous light escape and drift upward into the air.

SERRURE

Hold on. You're losing something.

Serrure carefully lifts the edge of the protective cloak draped over Lantern's form. Beneath it, a visible gash tears through the metal armor. From this breach, blue light seeps outward in wisps that resemble drifting smoke.

SERRURE

That's your energy. What keeps you standing.

He tightens his grip on Lantern's armored shoulder, a gesture of solidarity and concern. The two knights stand together, isolated figures surrounded by the alien crystalline formations that tower around them.

SERRURE

A suit that leaks goes out. Eventually.

Under the giant mushrooms, the road climbs into the dark.

SERRURE

So. We follow the road.

Serrure points the way. Lantern follows.

Lost Garden, episode 2 clocks in at 21 minutes of runtime, placing it within the Academy's half-hour episode classification—a category that encompasses episodes exceeding 20 minutes and extending up to 40. This entry is presented as a demonstration of method and craft rather than as a submission for Emmy consideration. For a series of this nature to qualify for Emmy eligibility, it would require a minimum of six episodes released within a single calendar year, target an audience demographic of 13 and over within the animation category, and secure a US premiere broadcast. You can watch the episode in its entirety using the embedded player below.

The script

A 24 minute episode in five movements.

Within the Academy's half-hour category, a qualifying episode must exceed 20 minutes in runtime but stay under 40. Target approximately 24 minutes of finished content: that typically translates to roughly 24 screenplay pages and a shot count between 180 to 220, with individual shots averaging 6 to 8 seconds each.
  1. 0:00 to 2:00

    The teaser

A question and a stake. The viewers are voters, so give them a reason to stay.

  2. 2:00 to 8:30

    Act one

The week's problem enters the established world. Reintroduce who we follow without a recap.

  3. 8:30 to 15:30

    Act two

The plan goes wrong. This is the stretch where an episode earns a nomination by surprising the viewer.

  4. 15:30 to 22:30

    Act three

A choice with a cost, and a change that carries into the next episode.

  5. 22:30 to 24:00

    The tag

A final image or a line that opens the next door. Then the credits.

Emmy judging evaluates animated series one episode at a time, and both drama and comedy nominees are required to submit a package of six episodes during the final voting round. Because of this structure, every individual episode you produce should function as a self-contained narrative that can be assessed on its own merits.

In order

From a series idea to an entry.

Submitting an Emmy entry represents the final milestone in a much longer production and business pipeline. Approach that pipeline in strategic order, and begin with the step most independent filmmakers overlook entirely: securing distribution before you shoot.
  1. 01

Step 1 · before you write

Choose the category and the length

Pick short form (2 to 20 minutes) or half-hour episodes, and count six episodes. Reread the rules for the 79th cycle the day they appear.

  2. 02

Step 2 · the first month

    Write the series

A bible and six episode outlines, then the first screenplay. Write it free in 熙熙, in industry format, and keep every version.

  3. 03

    Step 3 · early

    Secure where it will air

Eligibility needs a national US premiere on broadcast, cable or broadband. A program with no network or studio involved is vetted for the ballot, so a distributor or a platform deal comes before the budget.

  4. 04

    Step 4 · production

    Board it, then generate

Storyboard from the screenplay, then footage with Seedance in 熙熙. Keep the prompts and any original voice recordings.

  5. 05

    Step 5 · premiere

    Air inside the window

The first airing must be promoted and reviewed as the premiere, and every required episode must air by 31 May. A late episode moves the series to the next year.

  6. 06

    Step 6 · entry

Enter and be ready for questions

Submit by the spring deadline, with credits for every episode and a link to the series. Be ready to explain how AI was used, which the Academy may ask.

Eligibility traps

Eight ways to be out before the vote.

The majority of these preparatory requirements have nothing to do with AI tooling or technology. These are the structural and business reasons why a film that succeeds on the festival circuit will not automatically qualify as an Emmy submission.
  • A festival or private premiere

Entries available only in a limited number of physical places, on closed or invitation-only sites, or shown solely at conferences, events or festivals are not eligible. A festival circuit is not a premiere.

  • A premiere nobody noticed

The premiere must be the first airing, promoted and reviewed as such. Preview screenings posted online or late at night, without promotion or reviews, do not count.

  • Too few episodes

Six episodes must air in the eligibility year for animation, comedy, drama, variety and short form series. A fifth episode pushes everything to the next cycle.

  • A foreign production alone

A foreign production is ineligible unless it is a co-production between US and foreign partners agreed before production started, with a view to showing it on US television.

  • AI images in costume concept art

Illustrations for Costume Illustrator entries must be the work of a person. No AI images are allowed.

  • An AI voice with no original

If you manipulated a performer's voice with AI, submit the original recording as well. Without it, the voice-over entry cannot be vetted.

  • Fully generated stunts

Stunts may not be completely AI or VFX generated. They must be practical performances that aired.

  • Taking the Oscar route first

A program nominated for an Oscar is not eligible for the Emmys, and a non-documentary film placed on the Academy's viewing platform is deemed theatrical and ineligible. Choose television or cinema.

Why 熙熙

A series is a long project. Keep it connected.

The Emmy Awards recognize completed series that have been broadcast or released episodically, with each episode evaluated individually. 熙熙 provides series creators with a single unified workflow that spans every stage from initial series bible development all the way through to final edited footage.
  • Six episodes, one world

Characters, places and references carry from episode to episode, so episode six looks like episode one. The Academy counts six episodes before a series qualifies.

  • A record that answers an inquiry

Shots trace to scenes, scenes to the screenplay, and prompts are kept with each frame. If the Academy asks how the work was made, you can show it.

  • A writer's page

The notice talks about human storytelling. Your screenplay is the human part, and 熙熙 gives you industry formatting and free export to PDF and Final Draft.

  • A free first episode

The 免费档 costs 免费 and has no expiry. At ¥168 一年, the 年度会员 adds the storyboard and Seedance generation.
